The 20 Most Haunted Places in St. Louis

If you’ve seen The Exorcist, you have a general idea of the evil that happened in this house. It was a movie based off of a book of the true tale of a posessed 14-year-old boy. This was where he lived.

The wing where they treated the kid from The Exorcist has since been torn down, but it was right around this corner on South Broadway. The exorcism was performed on these grounds.

Mysterious white fogs are said to move around some headones at Bellefontaine, sometimes even in the broad daylight. Many believe these are ghostly figures returning to their own graves or those of their loved ones. Many victims from the cholera epidemic were buried here and it’s said the died so quickly that their souls are not at rest.

The “Ghost on the Hill” at Calvary Cemetery is one paranormal tale that has endured for years. It’s said that often when driving by Calvary Cemetery if you look up you will see a ghost standing on top of a hill on the southeast corner overlooking the road.

This is where you can find one of the most notorious ghosts in town: Hitchhike Annie. Discribed as a woman with long dark hair and wearing a white dress, Annie is said to flag you down for a ride, only to disappear once she gets into your car.

Built in 1823 by Captain Lewis Bissell, this house is said to be haunted by its original owner, who is said to be seen out in the parking lot frequently keeping watch over the house.

This trail alongside Ridge Road is said to be haunted AF. The frequently foggy area is said to be the former site of a loner who lived in the woods and would attack young couples looking for a lovers’ lane. It’s also supposedly the former site of an orphanage and is also haunted by a woman who was hit and killed by a train. If you drive this road at night, you will believe it all.

The Great Cyclone of May 1896 hit this area hard, causing multitudes of disasters in the area. One of the deadliest most damaging tornados in history, 255 people were killed in the area. It’s said that there are many ghosts that roam the streets of Lafayette Squre and the hallways of these old houses trying to figure out what happened to their lives.

Looking in the windows from outside this house feels creepy and nobody really knows why. There are reports that inside poltergeists move objects around but never cause too much trouble. Still, something just seems off at this place.

Dr. Franz Arzt (1844-1923) was a character in his time. An immigrant from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Arzt found tons of business opportunities in bustling St. Louis. He’s said to haunt the grounds of the property today (including the many secret underground tunnels). If you’re interested in exploring here, a piece of the property can be rented on Airbnb.

There is a small cemetery behind this house where a number of children were buried. Over the years, many people have claimed that they’ve seen the ghosts of these children playing in the garden.

This bed and breakfast is known all around the world for the shadowy figures and unexplained noises that scare guests frequently. It’s considered one of the most haunted spots in all of St. Louis, even more so than the Lemp Mansion.
