From Justin to Katy

Katy Perry went to space and all she got was the former Canadian prime minister. The pop star was spotted enjoying cocktails with Justin Trudeau at a swanky place in Montréal, and the internet has had quite the time dissecting the event. Unfortunately for the would-be Whistledowns of the interwebs, there was no PDA—just Katy’s sparkle and Trudeau’s signature grin.

Let’s do a quick recap of who’s who in this diplomatic dinner date. Katy Perry is a pop superstar, lifelong California gurl, a former Super Bowl performer, and a newly single woman on the market since breaking things off with her Legolas lookalike. Justin Trudeau is the most recent ex-Prime Minister of Canada, with hair that has launched a thousand tweets, now navigating life post-power and post-divorce. In case I didn’t make it obvious enough, they’re both recently single. Could that be a coincidence? Possibly. But the timing of their lil dinner date sure is convenient.

So here’s what happened in Montréal. On July 28th, the pair went on a stroll down Mount Royal Park, followed by a quick date at Le Violon where they enjoyed the tasting menu and a few cocktails. According to restaurant staff—who forked over the deets way too easily, if you ask me—there was zero visible romance. The pair enjoyed beef tartare and lamb gnocchi, and found the food so delicious that they made a point of thanking the chef personally. Such polite. Very Canadian. There was no kissing, handholding, or drama of any kind. Just two celebs vibing over small sips and bites.

Previously on their love lives, each was happily coupled with a significant other with whom they share a kid or two. Katy Perry had been famously engaged to Orlando Bloom since 2019. The two called it quits this year, but remain committed to co-parenting their daughter. Justin Trudeau and Sophie Grégoire were married for 18 years when they pulled the plug on their relationship. They have three children together, and appear to be working together well on the co-parenting front. Both Perry and Trudeau are well aware of the headlines surrounding their names, and now that they’re back on the dating market, could probably just use a friend who understands what they’re going through.

Regardless of the utter lack of romance, the internet is having a field day attempting to ship the two. Twitter? Melting. TMZ? Frothing at the mouth. Reddit? Unhinged, but Reddit’s always like that. The question everyone wants to know the answer to is: are they dating? Collaborating? Planning a pop-political crossover album? No one knows for sure, but since we’re wildly speculating, I thought I’d throw out a few of my own outrageous ideas. In no particular order, here are my theories:
Justin wants Katy to run for office in Canada.
Katy is auditioning Justin for her next music video.
The date was actually a super-secret UN peacekeeping mission disguised as a tasting menu.
They’re about to launch their new skincare line that is made entirely of maple syrup and glitter.
She’s learning to speak French, and he’s her tutor.

Seriously though, they may just be friends, or they might be plotting world domination via lamb gnocchi. Until we know for sure which way they’re swaying, let’s just say that Justin has taste, and Katy’s got… diplomacy, I guess.
